Pi Day Penny Project

The following is a simple and very inexpensive project to make for Pi Day.  For those who don't know, Pi day is on March 14, or 3.14, which is the approximate value of Pi.  I've made a few of these and thought I'd do a quick post about it.

So the first thing to do is trace the penny.

   This is the traced circle.

I just freehanded a crude Pi symbol.

This is the penny next to the drawing.

As is my usual procedure, I applied rubber cement
to the paper and the metal to be cut.

Then I glued the paper to the penny.

I used a awl to make a starter spot for the
drill bit to start.

A shot of the drill bit making a hole to
put the saw blade through.

Here you can see blade fitted through the
starter hole and me sawing the design out

Another shot of me sawing.

This is what it looks like with the design
cut out and the paper still on.  I also
drilled a hole at the top to fit a jump ring through.

Here is the penny with the paper removed.  Next I
filed the design to clean up the lines a bit.

Her you can see the jump ring fitted and me soldering
the jump ring shut.  You could avoid soldering by using
a small split ring if necessary.

Here's the finished item. It's a pretty quick project,
if your sawing skills are reasonable. It took longer
to upload the pictures and write the text than to
actually do the project.
